Boomers, your idea of privacy and security is an illusion!! How many of you have your name, phone number and home address in a telephone directory? From the size of the directory I’m looking at, I’d say, most of you. Do you realize what this means?!? It means people can find you–literally, physically!
Your concern about privacy is cultural, generational, and is less about privacy than it is about your comfort (or lack thereof) with change. Look at the privacy story from another angle. Right now, Millennials and teens are creating a record of their lives that is richer and more complete than any journal or scrapbook we may have created in our youth (if we created one at all). I have a few school yearbooks with the signatures and statements of my classmates. They have an extensive collection of pictures, stories, and conversations that tell the story of their lives. And contrary to what our sensationalistic press might say, it’s not all about drinking, swearing, and sleeping around.
Now think about the story of our time that they are creating and recording for future generations. If we must remember the past or be condemned to repeat it, we may be on the verge of a level of collective maturity we’ve never experienced as a species before, driven by the unveiling of the most complete historical record ever compiled.
So shut up and go back to playing golf… and put the scotch away… All you do is drink, grandpa.
