During a walk through the Enchanted Forest last night I blissfully reconnected with the parking lot. Drum circles, art, and incense in the air, the Burning Man/Grateful Dead tribe is well represented here at SXSW.
This triggers reflections on the connections, culturally and aesthetically, between generations and cultural movements. Many things have changed, indeed, and we have all survived Reaganism and other related 911 situations. But here on the other side, the idealism and community-first values that inspired and nourished Dead Heads throughout Jerry's journey are alive and well in the tech-community today.
Specifically, the coworking subset with the larger tech/culture/community explicitly embraces some core values that bridge the hippie tribe with today's tech/coworking tribe. Scene-pioneers Citizen Space have articulated these values beautifully: collaboration, opennes, community, accessibility, sustainability.
Here in Austin, host to SXSW, Launchpad Coworking is cohering around these values also, and will likely be a hub/magnet for the gathering of the coworking tribe at SXSW next year. Austin has been a vortex in the hippie/cowboy/(now)tech community for 40 years, and Launchpad is a natural fit.
Puzzle pieces are added, and the community grows.
