Throw in some Burning Man tribal experience and you begin to get a picture of a parallel world where work and life integrate seamlessly, and the (horrible) compromises that Milk Toast used to make in the past seem millions of miles away.
As Bandit and I synthesize our thoughts about Independence/Free Agent Nation 2.0/Coworking/ etc. , it seems that what we are witnessing is indeed Free Agent Nation 2.0. First time around in the late 1990s and early 2000s the energy and desire were there, but the support structures- physical spaces, insurances, gigs, tools, economic conditions- weren’t. Especially after 2001. Ouch!
Now, despite the current recession, these supportive structures do exist. The conditions for ’supported independence’ are here now. And, because of this, many of us have left the reservation. We are now roaming the world, make a living independently.
Some of us are on raiding parties. Some of us even take scalps…but with grace, of course.
As the war parties trail off to sack the settlements, you can here the warriors in the distance as they chant…
