Evolutionary scientists now suggest that our hardwiring, despite several million years of cultural evolution, remains the same as our nomadic hunter-gatherer ancestors. London Business School's Nigel Nicholson suggests that this sets up a huge gap/conflict/void between our core human instincts and the large, sedentary organizations in which most people work. His book, Managing the Human Animal, is a clear exposition of this point, and helps understand the deep dysfunction that is corporate life.
Fortunately, many technology wielding post-modern nomads already understand this, and are back out in the urban savannahs moving from project to project. Call them the Hunter Gatherers of the Knowledge Economy.
