What is a currency binary? I don’t know, but I’d feel really smart if I did? Finding out, surprisingly, is not very difficult. Yes, you can Google it, but you can also go to Investopedia and look up any possible word, term, or concept related to finance. Call it Finance 101.

What is a currency binary? I don’t know, but I’d feel really smart if I did? Finding out, surprisingly, is not very difficult. Yes, you can Google it, but you can also go to Investopedia and look up any possible word, term, or concept related to finance. Call it Finance 101.

What does big wave surfing have to do with corporate innovation? Again, I’m not quite sure, but later this afternoon I’ll have a look in on the Innovation and Design channel at BusinessWeek and find out. In case you don’t get the chance to read it yourself, I’ll report back here soon to give you my take on the piece. Call it Strategic Innovation 101.

And for your core courses in Human Resource Management, Strategy, Sales and Marketing, Operations, IT, Leadership, and Communication, have a look at Fast Company’s article archive section to read articles that cover much of the ‘courses’ on offer at your local MBA. Call it Not an MBA.

Two generations ago few, few business leaders studied business, per se, at university. Economics, perhaps, but rarely ‘business.’ Rather, they studied some field that made them literate and capable of learning, and then they learned about an industry and its business once on the job. Back then, the MBA was indeed an obscurity. How did they do it? How did they learn about the world of business around them?

First, they were curious and motivated to learn. They needed to know these things to get on in their careers. So, they read Forbes, Fortune, The Financial Times, and pulled what they needed out of their reading.

Many of the magazines have changed and new ones now have the currency that these once did. But all that learning is still out there for the curious. And without paying some bloke $50,000 to do it.

There will be NO exams, just opportunity…
